"Instruction" by Jax Jones feat. Demi Lovato & Stefflon Don - Single Review

Is Demi Lovato becoming the new queen of the dance club in record time?

Shortly after teaming up with Cheat Codes for the impressive, sleeper hit “No Promises”, the former Disney starlet has now jumped on a new, fierce banger alongside Jax Jones and Stefflon Don. Constructed to teach listeners how to move, expect the release to light up the charts.

“Instruction” is a straightforward, edgy and energetic club track, complete with its own choreographed dance routine and Lovato dropping an explicit during her commanding delivery (her historic first time?), demanding listeners take control of their night out. Infused with infectious, Latin-flavored production from Jones, Lovato is thrown into uncharted, contemporary territory and effectively keeps up with the momentum and quick pace.

Not since the should-have-been-a-bigger-hit “Neon Lights” have we heard Lovato accompanied by a dominating dance beat – “Cool For The Summer” is more pop/rock – and on “Instruction” the tempo and assertiveness reach uncontainable, enjoyable levels. After a quick step-by-step slayage tutorial, Lovato boldly proclaims she’s the ultimate boss, declares she is not bothered by price tags and compares herself to the legendary supreme Diana Ross. All in the same verse!

Her vocals do appear to be slightly altered, however, the technical trick does aid in the overall effect of the female-empowering release. “Wind to the left, sway to the right, drop it down low, and take it back high, bitch, I don’t need introduction, follow my simple instruction,” Lovato sings on the summer-ready chorus, before Jones completely takes hold of the reins on the dance break. Bassline drums, fire alarms and whistles then quickly move in to surround the listener.

While Jones and Lovato put in noticeable overtime to get “Instruction” off the ground, the contribution from Birmingham-native Stefflon Don in the latter half should not be overlooked. Just when the new single seems to be heading toward a dancehall-only destination, Don veers off in an R&B/hip-hop direction. For the untrained ear, it might prove difficult to keep up with the raptress’ speedy flow and thick accent, yet her proclamation of being the realest star is heard loud and clear.

Overall, “Instruction” is a fast and furious, reggaeton-inspired release that could and should do damage on the radio airwaves. Just as the Siracha-featuring cover art suggests, the collaboration is pure fire. Lovato’s recent one-off featured guest spots may not be a telling indicator as to what direction the artist is taking her anticipated sixth studio album, but if she’s as fearless as she has been, slightly embracing a diva-like attitude, then we are all in for an exciting ride.
