Song Review: Vocal Powerhouse Demi Lovato Wonders When "I Love Me" is Enough

After pleading for "Anyone" to listen to her traumatic comeback effort back in January, vocal powerhouse Demi Lovato now wonders when "I Love Me" will finally be enough.

Serving as the official lead single off an upcoming seventh studio album, "I Love Me" is an uptempo pop track polished with R&B inspiration. Assuring the downtrodden that they do not need a romantic partner by their side to feel good enough, the new release ultimately becomes an empowering anthem of self-love and reform.

After Lovato promises to ignore the naysayers moving forward, choosing to deflect the body-shaming comments and not let anyone tell her how to live her life, the artist begins the work to not be so hard on herself. It's a change from holding herself to a higher standard than even those who have done her harm in the past.

"Why am I always looking for a ride or die?, 'cause mine's the only heart I'm gonna have for life, after all the times I went and fucked it up, I wonder when I love me is enough," she belts on the uplifting chorus.

"I Love Me" touches on similar subject matter as its predecessor, but with a more optimistic tone. Instead of a vulnerable ballad, Lovato sounds defiant as she owns up to her mistakes. Co-produced by Oak Felder ("Sorry Not Sorry", Alicia Keys) and co-written alongside fellow pop singer/songwriter Anne-Marie, Lovato makes it clear that she no longer needs to prove herself to anyone.

Pressure can sometimes come at you from every angle, it's difficult to keep your head up, but Lovato reinforces the idea that you should at least have yourself in your corner. "I Love Me" succeeds thanks to its tongue-and-cheek lyrics, message of perseverance, and the artist's near-perfect vocal performance. The song bounces around in terms of progression, Lovato keeps up with the pace.

To support the pop anthem, Lovato literally battles her inner saboteur on her path toward recovery in the accompanying music video. Addressing her recent drug overdose and including stand-ins that bare a resemblance to the Jonas Brothers, the artist eventually takes to the streets to celebrate her strength and worth.
