After many delays and an unfortunate leak, Black Eyed Peas leading man, Will.i.am, is set to release his fourth solo album, #willpower, on December 10. The project, featuring talents from many A-list artists ranging from the pop, dance and hip-hop genres was preceded by two unique, but great tracks including "T.H.E (The Hardest Ever) featuring Jennifer Lopez and Mick Jagger" and "This is Love feat. Eva Simons", both which had little to no impact on the Billboard Hot 100. Now it seems that the producer/singer is getting everything on the right track with the release of a brand new single featuring the princess of pop, Britney Spears. "Scream and Shout" is the name of the club banger and represents Spears' first release since her 2011 album, Femme Fatale, which scored three top ten hits on the charts, including the number one "Hold It Against Me". It is certainly an unlikely collaboration, but it is here and the music video is set to appear on Thanksgiving Day.
"Scream and Shout" follows a familiar formula found in the dance genre. Take a male lead and have him tackle the verses while the female vocalist gives the chorus a much needed boost, likely to become the only part the listener will actually remember. The nearly five-minute track opens up with a barely recognizable Spears robotically repeating "Everybody in the club, All eyes on us", which sort of reminds me of certain vocal moments from Lady Gaga. Will.i.am then comes charging in as he states he just wants to scream and shout as Spears' now-signature line "It's Britney bitch" is heard in the background. The rapper has been criticized for his sometimes amateur lyrics and delivery and unfortunately some of those moments are buried within the heavily-produced effort. The track is fun, it will certainly do its job once it starts making its way in every club and dance floor around the country, but I was just hoping for a bit more than this generic pop track which only uses Britney for her name recognition.
I will go so far as to say the single release is the worst of the three official singles from the album, coming in behind "This is Love" and "T.H.E (The Hardest Ever)". I'm not saying it is a terrible pairing. I was dancing every time the chorus came through the speakers. It is just not something extremely groundbreaking or unique enough to separate itself from the dozens of other songs that sound exactly like it. Will this single do well on the charts? More than likely, but only because Britney fans will eat up anything she puts out whether it is good or not. The music video will premiere on an episode of The X Factor, where Spears has been a judge, giving the best facial expressions of the year, and I'm sure it will help the song's success. However, after a couple of listens I am able to say it is far from my favorite release from either of the artists. It has its moments, the production is great, but I'm sure after a huge debut, its shine will quickly start to fade away and be forgotten. Can I hear the collaborations with Nicole Scherzinger, Demi Lovato and Natalia Kills now Will.i.am?
